Product Information

Featuring narrower slats that are particularly suited for doors and smaller windows, our 1 3/8" Performance Blinds feature dynamic options to give you the best customized wood blind possible. Our 1 3/8" Performance Wood Blinds are constructed from American basswood and feature a matching designer valance. We let you customize not only the size and color of your blind but also how you operate it. Manual cordless lift and rotating wand tilt is included standard for easy and reliable movement to raise and lower the blind and to open and close the slats. Alternatively, you can upgrade to a fully motorized version that includes a rechargeable motor in the headrail that both rotates the slats and raises and lowers the blind. A multi-channel remote allows you to operate single blinds or multiple blinds at once with the push of a button – perfect for quick and convenient adjustments and for hard-to-reach windows! Add optional cloth tapes for extra light blocking and a splash of color.

How to Measure

How to Measure: Inside Mount

3 min read

Let's make sure an inside mount will work for your window!  Using a metal tape measure, first check if you have sufficient depth:

  • Measure inside the window opening from the back of the window to the front of the opening where the blind would mount. The depth at the top of the window must be at least 1 5/8" to mount the brackets. To have a flush mount (meaning the blind and valance are fully recessed in the window opening) the depth must be at least 3 3/4". If your depth is not sufficient for mounting the brackets, please see our outside mount instructions or consider a different product.

How to Measure:

Let's start with the Width:

  • Measure inside of the window opening/frame from left to right to the nearest 1/8" at three places: at the top of the opening, the middle of the opening, and then the bottom of the opening. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the narrowest. If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8".  That is your ordering width.

Now, let's do the Height:

  • Measure the inside of the window opening/frame from the top of the opening to the bottom of the opening/sill to the nearest 1/8" in three places: on the left-hand side, the middle, and on the right-hand side. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the tallest. That is your ordering height.

Note: Always provide us with the actual measurement of the window opening. We will make the necessary deduction of approximately 1/2" to your blind's width to allow room for installation and for proper movement of the blind within the window opening. No deductions will be made to your height.

How to Measure: Outside Mount

3 min read

Before you start measuring, decide where above your window opening you want to mount your blind. To mount the brackets, you will need at least 2". The blind can be installed directly above the window opening, or higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the blind is raised.

If you have trim around the window, you can mount the blind above the trim, directly on the trim (if you have the required minimum flat space for the brackets), or to the sides of the trim if you do not have enough mounting space above the window or on the trim itself. See the directions below for how you'd like to install your blind.

If you do not have sufficient vertical space for mounting the brackets, please see our inside mount instructions or consider a different product.

Width:

  • Looking at your window and surrounding wall, decide what area you would like to cover. We recommend the blind extends about 2" on each side of the window opening for the best light control and appearance.
  • Using a metal tape measure, measure from left to right including your desired extra space on each side of the window—that is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window you would like to install your blind but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. The blind can be positioned higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the blind is raised.
  • Measure from the top of where you will mount the blind on the wall down to where you want the bottom of the blind to be, using the same extra space below your window opening as you used above; if you have a protruding windowsill, measure down to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.

Width:

  • Looking at your window and surrounding wall, decide what area you would like to cover. We recommend the blind extends about 2" on either side of the window opening for the best light control and appearance. You can also choose to have the blind the same width as your window trim.
  • Using a metal tape measure, measure from left to right including any desired extra space on each side of the window—that is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window you would like to install your blind but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. The blind can be positioned higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the blind is raised.
  • Measure from the top of where you will mount the blind on the wall down to where you want the bottom of the blind to be, using the same extra space below your window opening as you used above, or to the bottom edge of the trim if you prefer; if you have a protruding windowsill, measure down to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.

Note: We provide complimentary spacer blocks upon request. These go behind the installation brackets to position the blind away from the wall and prevent the blind from hitting the frame. Spacer blocks add an additional 3/8" of depth for installation. Note that the valance returns (the side pieces that wrap around the headrail) will be made 3/8" longer when requesting spacer blocks.

Width:

  • Confirm that the height of your trim is at least the minimum height required for installing the mounting brackets. At the top of your window, use a steel measuring tape and measure from outer edge to outer edge of the trim.  That is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Measure from the top of your trim to the bottom of your trim or to the top of the windowsill if you have a protruding sill. That is your ordering height.

Width:

  • Using a metal tape measure, measure left to right from the outside edge of the trim piece that goes around the glass to the other outside edge. That is your ordering width. However, if you have space, it is best to order the blind about 2" wider for better light control.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window trim piece you would like to install your blind but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. Measure down to where you want the bottom of the blind to be, using the same extra space below the window trim piece as you used above. That is your ordering height.

Note: We carry complimentary hold-downs (door brackets) which can be requested during the ordering process. These should be installed for a successful door mount as they secure the blind at the bottom of the door so that it does not swing when the door opens and closes.

The 1 3/8-inch Performance Wood Blinds are crafted from genuine real wood, offering a refined finish and natural grain that faux wood blinds cannot fully replicate. While faux wood blinds can be suitable for high-moisture areas, real wood blinds offer timeless elegance, natural warmth, and a more polished appearance. Real wood blinds have excellent durability, elevated style, and a premium feel that enhances any room. If you're comparing window coverings, real wood provides a classic look that complements both traditional and modern interiors.

Do these blinds provide room darkening and light control?

Yes. The tightly fitted slats help improve room darkening when closed and allow controlled light filtering when tilted open. The cordless lift system eliminates dangling cords, making these cordless blinds a safe option for homes with kids or pets. The solid bottom rail and sturdy frame help block light along the window opening, and spacer blocks are available if needed for clearance with outside mounted blinds. These key features provide better light management while maintaining a clean, stylish appearance.

Are these blinds easy to install and maintain?

These wood blinds are designed for an easy install process with included brackets and easy DIY steps. You can choose inside mount or outside mount, depending on your window size and trim. The durable construction helps resist fading over time, maintaining color and quality even with daily use. Real wood blinds are crafted for long-term durability. If you need assistance, our support team can help you find the right slat sizes, confirm measurements, or match your blinds to other shades throughout your home.

FAQ

What is the difference between faux wood blinds and real wood blinds?

Faux wood blinds are made from synthetic materials designed to mimic the look of real wood, while real wood blinds are crafted from genuine hardwood for a more refined finish. Real wood blinds provide timeless elegance, natural warmth, and a classic appearance that enhances both traditional and modern interiors. While faux wood blinds are more practical for humid areas, many homeowners prefer real wood blinds for their superior style, quality, and authentic grain detail.

Do these wood blinds provide room darkening?

Yes, these wood blinds are designed to improve room darkening when the slats are fully closed. The tight slat alignment helps reduce incoming light, and the durable construction minimizes light gaps along the window frame. While they are not blackout shades, they provide excellent light control and privacy for bedrooms, offices, or any room where you want better light management. The ability to adjust the slats allows you to control both brightness and visibility throughout the day.

Are these blinds available in different slat sizes and window sizes?

Yes, these real wood blinds are available in multiple slat sizes in matching colors to suit different window size requirements. Narrower slats work well for doors and smaller window openings, while wider slats complement larger windows. Custom width and height options ensure a proper fit for your window, helping your blinds look tailored and professional in any room. Selecting the right slat size is an important benefit when designing cohesive window coverings throughout your home.

How durable are real wood blinds compared to other options?

Real wood blinds are crafted for durability, timeless elegance, and long-term performance. The sturdy bottom rail, reinforced lift system, and quality factory construction help prevent warping and reduce fading over time when used in appropriate interior spaces. Compared to some faux wood blinds, genuine wood provides a more polished and stylish finish. Proper installation and care help maintain the color, reduce fading, and preserve the natural beauty of real wood.

Are these blinds safe for homes with kids and pets?

Yes, these wood blinds are available with cordless lift options to eliminate hanging cords, making them a safer choice for homes with kids and pets. The cordless design improves safety while maintaining easy operation and smooth lift control. Spacer blocks can also be used during installation of outside mount blinds if additional clearance is needed for window trim or molding. These features help provide secure access and reliable performance without compromising style.
