Before you begin
If the shade is bound, leave the binding on until the shade is installed in the window.
Double-check the headrail width; if you are installing several shades, match each one to its window.
Check your mounting surface so you have suitable fasteners and tools; use drywall anchors (not included) when mounting into drywall.
Lay out and organize all the parts.
- 0" to 48" wide: 2 brackets
- 48" to 122" wide: 3 brackets
- 122" to 144" wide: 4 brackets
- Longer screws may be needed with extension brackets and spacers.
Inside mount
Check that the window casing is at least 1 1/2" deep for a partially recessed mount, or at least 2" deep for a flush (fully recessed) mount.
Hold the inside mount brackets at each end of the headrail and, using the notches in the headrail as a guide, mark their locations so they are square and evenly placed in the window.
If your shade includes spacers, slip one over the bolt of each bracket.
Attach each bracket at the marks with two screws placed in holes diagonal from each other.
Slide the brackets' threaded shafts through the slots in the headrail and secure the headrail with the wing nuts.
Outside mount
Using the notches in the headrail as a guide, mark the bracket locations and check them with a level.
Make sure the back of each bracket will sit flush on a flat surface; do not mount on curved molding.
If your shade includes spacers, slip one over the bolt of each bracket.
Attach each bracket at the marks with two screws placed in holes diagonal from each other, using drywall anchors in drywall.
Slide the brackets' threaded shafts through the slots in the headrail and secure the headrail with the wing nuts.
Install the cord tension device
The tension device comes attached to the cord loop. The shade will not operate properly unless it is installed.
Slide the cord tensioner down to the bottom of the cord loop.
Screw the tension device to the wall or window frame with the screws provided, keeping the cord loop taut but with enough slack for the cord to slide easily.
In drywall or plaster, drill with a 3/16" bit and insert 1/2" wall anchors (not included) before the screws; in metal, use anchors made for metal.
Attach the valance returns (outside mount only)
Wood valance: insert the return clips into the groove on the back of the valance and rotate them 90 degrees.
Wood valance: push the return clips as far as they go into each end of the valance, then line them up with the slots on the headrail and slide them into place.
Classic valance with hook-and-loop strips only: line the return up with the end of the headrail, strips at the top, and press firmly until the strips engage.
Classic valance with hook-and-loop strips and plastic corners: peel the backing off the plastic, line the return up with the end of the headrail, strips at the top, and press firmly so the strips engage and the plastic sticks to the back of the valance.
Add optional hardware
Hold-down brackets: tap the hold-down pin into the center hole of the bottom rail (some styles have it built in), screw the brackets at the bottom of the window, then slip the pin into the bracket hole.
Extension brackets (outside mount): assemble them to give 1" to 3" of clearance between the headrail and the mounting surface to clear obstructions.
Spacer blocks (outside mount): add one spacer for an extra 3/8" of clearance, using longer screws (not provided) if needed.
- Never use more than one spacer block; stacking them could cause the shade to fall.
Operate and adjust the shade
Pull one side of the cord loop to lower the shade to the height you want.
Pull the other side of the cord loop to raise the shade.
If the bottom of the shade is uneven, pull on either side to stretch the yarn and realign it.
If the shade does not lie flat, roll it tightly from the bottom and twist the roll clockwise on one side and counterclockwise on the other to align the yarns and slats.
If a strand of yarn slips off the edge, remove it from top to bottom; this does not weaken the shade.
