Screw-mount shades: before you begin
Check that the mounting hardware kit is complete. It includes one extra screw of each size.
If you are mounting into drywall or plaster, get #6 plastic anchors (not included).
Plan the brackets: place one about 1" to 6" from each end of the headrail, and space any extra brackets as evenly as possible between them, clear of the cords and mechanisms inside the headrail.
- Shades up to 36" wide: 2 mounting brackets
- 37" to 52" wide: 3 mounting brackets
- 53" to 72" wide: 4 mounting brackets
- 2 1 1/8" screws per bracket
- Hold-downs (outside mount only): 2 brackets and 4 3/8" screws
- Handles: 1 for shades up to 59" wide, 2 for shades over 59" wide
- Drill bits: 3/32" for screws and 1/4" for wall anchors (the mounting steps call for a 5/64" pilot bit).
Screw-mount shades: attach the brackets to the headrail
Hold each bracket with its locking arm facing out.
Position the bracket so the headrail engages the inside front and back of the bracket.
Push the locking arm inward to lock the headrail in place.
Screw-mount shades: inside mount
With the brackets clipped on, hold the shade in place inside the window frame.
Mark with a pencil where the brackets touch the window frame.
Remove the brackets from the headrail and line them up with the marks.
Pre-drill the screw holes with a 5/64" bit and fasten the brackets with the included 1 1/8" screws.
Screw-mount shades: outside mount
With the brackets attached, hold the shade as level as possible at the height you want, centered over the window.
Mark the exact location of each bracket on the wall.
Remove the brackets from the headrail and position them on the marks.
Pre-drill the screw holes with a 5/64" bit and fasten the brackets with 1 1/8" screws.
Screw-mount shades: secure the headrail
Set the headrail into the mounted brackets so it engages the front and back of each bracket.
Push each locking arm inward to lock the headrail.
Gently pull on the headrail to make sure it is locked securely.
No-tools shades: attach the brackets to the headrail
You receive inside-mount or outside-mount brackets to match your order. Each bracket sits on an installation plate with two sections of permanent 3M mounting tape. Leave the adhesive covers on until all alignment and surface prep is done.
Position a bracket about 1" to 6" from each end of the headrail. On wider shades with 3 or more brackets, space the extra bracket evenly between the two outer ones.
Slide the inner front edge of the headrail into the slot at the front of each bracket, pushing the front of the bracket down and in.
Push the bracket down until the flexible metal tab at the bottom snaps onto the back of the headrail.
No-tools shades: prepare the surface and mount the brackets
Make sure the mounting surface is clean, dry and flat.
Lightly rub the included alcohol pad where each bracket will go and wait at least 5 minutes for it to dry.
Inside mount: hold the shade where you plan to mount it inside the opening and mark the rear of each bracket plate where it touches the window frame.
Outside mount: hold the shade at the height you want on the wall or window frame, centered over the opening, and mark the exact location of each bracket.
Remove the brackets from the headrail.
One bracket at a time, peel the thin red protective layer off the adhesive pad, then slowly and precisely align the bracket with its mark.
Press each bracket firmly in place for at least 60 seconds.
If possible, wait at least an hour before snapping the shade into the brackets.
Attach the handles
Attach the handle to the bottom rail. It is designed to keep your hands off the shade fabric.
If your shade has 2 handles, divide the shade's total width by 4 and attach one handle that distance from each outside edge.
- A single handle must be centered on the rail.
Operate the shade
To lower the shade, grip the bottom rail or handle and slowly pull straight down to the height you want.
To raise the shade, place your hand under the bottom rail or handle and slowly lift it to the height you want.
Keep the bottom rail level as it moves. With two handles, always use both hands.
Install the hold-down brackets (no-tools version, optional)
Use hold-down brackets only if the shade will stay in a permanently lowered position.
Lower the shade fully and mark the outside ends of the bottom rail with a pencil.
Peel the liner off one side of each adhesive pad and stick it to the base of a hold-down bracket.
Line the brackets up with the marks, remove the liner from the other side, and press them in place.
Remove adhesive brackets (no-tools version)
The adhesive is permanent, so removal may damage the surface. Expect to do some patching and refinishing.
Insert a knife above each mounting plate and cut through the foam tape with a sawing motion, or use thin wire or dental floss held in both hands.
Remove leftover adhesive with your fingers or a putty knife.
Citrus solvents may soften the adhesive but will not dissolve it.
