Before you begin
Check that the parts in your package match the parts list; some parts vary with your lift system and mount.
Choose fasteners for your mounting surface: the provided No. 6 hex head screws for wood, wall anchors or expansion bolts for drywall or plaster, and sheet metal screws for metal (anchors, bolts and sheet metal screws not provided).
Decide on an inside mount (shade fits within the window opening) or an outside mount (shade mounts outside the opening).
Motorized shades: pair the remote with the motor before you install the shade in the window.
Plan the bracket placement
Bracket count and placement are the same for inside and outside mounts. Mounting the brackets level is essential for the shade to work properly.
Place the end brackets 3" in from each end of the headrail and space any additional brackets evenly between them.
Shim the brackets if needed so they are level and aligned.
- Cordless lift, cord loop and motorized shades: 18" to 38" wide: 2 brackets
- Cordless lift, cord loop and motorized shades: 38-1/8" to 72" wide: 3 brackets
- Cordless lift, cord loop and motorized shades: 72-1/8" to 106" wide: 4 brackets
- Cordless lift, cord loop and motorized shades: 106-1/8" to 140" wide: 5 brackets
- Cordless lift, cord loop and motorized shades: 140-1/8" to 174" wide: 6 brackets
- Cordless lift & lock: 12" to 31" wide: 2 brackets; 31-1/8" to 72": 3 brackets; 72-1/8" to 84": 4 brackets
- Cordlock: 12" to 31" wide: 2 brackets; 31-1/8" to 72": 3 brackets
- Simplicity rechargeable motorized: up to 38" wide: 2 brackets; 38-1/8" to 72": 3 brackets; over 72-1/8": 4 brackets
Inside mount
Before mounting, allow extra depth to clear obstructions such as window cranks or handles.
Drill pilot holes with a 3/32" drill bit.
Screw each bracket to the top of the window opening through its two top holes.
Make sure all brackets are level and aligned.
If you are fastening into drywall, use wall anchors and follow the anchor instructions (anchors not provided).
- Cordless lift and cord loop: 3/4" minimum depth, 2-1/8" to be fully recessed
- Cordless lift & lock and cordlock: 1" minimum depth, 2-1/2" to be fully recessed
- Motorized with external battery mounted away from the headrail: 3/4" minimum depth, 2-1/8" for a flush mount
- Motorized with external battery mounted to the back of the headrail: 2-5/8" minimum depth, 3-1/4" for a flush mount
- Simplicity rechargeable motorized, wall-mounted wand: 1/2" minimum depth, 2-1/4" fully recessed
- Simplicity rechargeable motorized, headrail-mounted wand: 1-1/4" minimum depth, 3" fully recessed
Outside mount
Drill pilot holes with a 3/32" drill bit.
Screw each bracket to the wall or molding through its two back holes.
Make sure all brackets are level and aligned.
If you are fastening into drywall, use wall anchors and follow the anchor instructions (anchors not provided).
- Minimum flat mounting surface height: 1-1/2" for cordless lift, cord loop, motorized and Simplicity motorized shades; 3/4" for cordless lift & lock and cordlock shades.
Spacer blocks and extension brackets (optional)
Spacer blocks: attach one to the end of each bracket, using screws long enough to secure the bracket to the surface. Use no more than three spacer blocks per bracket.
Do not use spacer blocks if you are installing extension brackets.
Extension brackets: position them on the wall with their tops aligned and level, and mount each through its back holes with two screws.
Attach the installation brackets to the extension brackets with the included screws and nuts, using the same holes on every bracket so the projection is even.
- Motorized shades with the external battery mounted to the back of the headrail require extension brackets.
Side mount with extension brackets (cordless lift, cord loop and motorized)
Measure from the windowsill up to the mounting height on each side of the window frame and mark it.
Mount an extension bracket on each side of the window frame, checking that the headrail will sit perfectly level.
Attach the mounting brackets to the extension brackets with the nuts and bolts provided.
Side mount with keyhole brackets (cordless lift & lock and cordlock)
Align the top of a side mount bracket with the desired height of the top of the headrail, mark the screw holes, remove the bracket and drill the holes.
Insert the screws for the keyhole slots only, leaving about 1/8" of each screw sticking out.
Pull the end cap out of the headrail, slide the bracket on, replace the end cap and slide the bracket all the way into the headrail. Repeat at the other end.
Hook one bracket's keyhole slot onto the screw in the window frame, then bring the other bracket over the screw on the other side, flexing it inward and sliding it down until the screw engages.
Make sure both brackets slide all the way down so each screw sits in the top of its keyhole slot.
Install a screw in the bottom hole of each bracket and tighten all screws.
Install the shade
Cordless lift shades: install the lift handle before mounting the shade. A color-coordinated handle comes pre-inserted in the moving rail(s); the clear handle or clear insert must be chosen when ordering.
Simplicity motorized shades: pull the small gray receiver wire (on the side of the motor nearest the end cap) out of the headrail and point it into the room, and route the motor wire out the back of the shade.
With the front of the shade facing you, tilt the headrail slightly backward and hook its front lip into the front clips of the brackets.
Make sure the shade is centered in the window opening.
Rotate the headrail back and up until the back clips of the brackets snap into the back of the rail.
Check that no fabric is pinched between the brackets and the headrail, and that the motor wire and charging port (motorized) don't interfere with a bracket.
- The plastic lift handle is not easily removable; contact customer service if it needs to come off.
Install the cord tensioner (continuous cord loop)
Slide the cord tensioner to the bottom of the cord loop.
Insert a small screwdriver, punch or awl through the screw hole at the bottom of the tensioner and move the hole down to the indicator line to release the safety mechanism.
Secure the tensioner to the wall or window frame following the instructions in the included tensioner kit.
Place the tensioner as close to the window as possible and out of the path of the shade material.
- The shade will not operate properly unless the cord tensioner is secured.
Attach the hold-down brackets (optional)
Lower the shade and place the hold-down pins into the bottom rail end caps.
Mark the hold-down bracket locations on the mounting surface.
With the brackets level, attach each one with two screws.
- On cordlock shades, hold-down brackets are for outside mounts only.
Operate a cordless lift shade
Hold the handle in the center of the bottom rail so the shade moves level. Shades over 42" wide have 2 handles placed within reach along the center of the rail.
Gently pull down to lower the shade to the desired position.
Gently push up to raise the shade to the desired position.
Operate a cordless lift & lock shade
Push and hold the button on the bottom rail handle.
Raise or lower the shade to the desired position.
Release the button to lock the shade in place.
Operate a continuous cord loop shade
Pull down on the cord loop: one side raises the shade and the other lowers it.
Don't raise the shade higher than it was designed to go; if you keep pulling the same cord after the shade is fully lowered, it will start to rise.
If the shade doesn't raise evenly, lower it completely so the cords can realign on the spool.
Operate a cordlock shade
Bottom-up: to lower the shade, pull the cord inward toward the center of the shade; to raise and lock it, pull the cord straight down and outward toward the edge.
Top-down/bottom-up: the right-hand cord operates the middle rail and the left-hand cord operates the bottom rail.
To lower either rail, pull its cord inward toward the center; to raise and lock it, pull the cord straight down and outward toward the edge.
Before raising the middle rail all the way to the headrail, raise the bottom rail a couple of inches so the equalizer isn't pinched between the rails.
Mount a cord cleat at a height out of children's reach and wrap the excess cord around it after each use.
Adjust the shade
Raise and lower the shade several times. If the length is wrong or the bottom rail isn't level, adjust it.
Bottom rail: lift the side to be adjusted to take the weight off the cord, then turn the adjustment screw with a screwdriver or dime, clockwise to lift that side or counterclockwise to lower it.
Intermediate rail: lift the side to be adjusted and turn its screw the same way.
Top-down/bottom-up cordless lift & lock bottom rail: remove the right end cap of the bottom rail and take out the small white plastic tool inside.
Use the tool to press the plastic dial just to the right of where the tool was by about 1/4", then turn it clockwise to lower or counterclockwise to raise the bottom rail. A flat-head screwdriver works if the tool is lost.
Put the tool back in the bottom rail and replace the end cap.
- Half a turn of the adjustment screw equals 1/4" of adjustment; maximum adjustment is 1/2".
Link a remote (Simplicity rechargeable motorized)
Your shade is set at the factory to the channel you ordered, or channel 1 if none was given. If you ordered channel 0, the shade and remote are not linked, and you must link them before installing the shade. Read this section completely before you start.
Select the channel you want with the remote's CHANNEL buttons.
Press the SETTING button on the motor and release it as soon as the motor starts to beep. It will give 4 fast beeps followed by 5 long beeps.
Press CONFIRM on the remote during the long beeps, before the last one. The motor answers with 3 fast beeps to confirm the link.
Repeat for any other shade on the same channel (one shade per channel is recommended), then repeat the whole process for the remaining channels.
- Every linked shade is also automatically programmed to the ALL channel.
Operate and set a favorite position (Simplicity rechargeable motorized)
Select a channel with the CHANNEL buttons; the indicator light shows the active channel, and when all 5 lights are lit the remote controls all 5 channels.
Press UP or DOWN to raise or lower the shade, and STOP to stop it anywhere. Tap for less than 2 seconds to move in small steps; hold more than 2 seconds for standard speed.
To set a favorite position, move the shade there, press and hold the LIMIT button on the back of the remote with a small screwdriver or pen tip, then press and hold UP. Release both when the motor beeps.
To go to the favorite position, press STOP while the shade is at its upper or lower limit, or after it has been stopped for at least 3 seconds.
To change the favorite position, repeat the setting steps at the new position.
To erase it, bring the shade to the upper limit, press and hold LIMIT, then press and hold UP, and release both when the motor beeps.
Adjust the motor limits (Simplicity rechargeable motorized)
The upper and lower limits are set at the factory. If you clear them, you must reset both. Select the shade's channel first, and unplug other shades on the same channel if you're only adjusting one.
Lower limit: hold the LIMIT button until the motor beeps, then release it.
Press DOWN; the shade moves down continuously. Press STOP when it's close to the desired lower limit.
Fine-tune with UP or DOWN (the motor moves step by step), then press CONFIRM. The motor beeps to confirm.
Upper limit: press UP; the shade moves up continuously. Press STOP when it's close to the desired upper limit.
Fine-tune with UP or DOWN, then press CONFIRM. The motor beeps to confirm.
Charge the motor and replace the remote battery (Simplicity rechargeable motorized)
Charge the motor when the shade starts moving slower than normal.
Plug the 8.4v charger into the charging wire at the left end of the back of the headrail, then into an outlet. A red light means it is charging.
Leave it charging for 1 hour after the light turns green to fully charge the batteries.
To replace the remote battery, hold the remote face up and pull out the battery tray using the indentation on the back.
Insert a new CR2430 lithium battery with the writing facing up and slide the tray back in.
- A typical charge takes 4 to 6 hours.
Install the solar recharge unit (optional, Simplicity motorized)
Place the solar unit where it gets the most sunlight each day, usually directly on the glass. It needs at least 19" of window width to mount horizontally.
Tape method: cut the double-sided tape to fit inside the white border on the face (black side) of the panel and clean those areas with rubbing alcohol.
When dry, stick the tape to the panel, clean the glass with rubbing alcohol, then remove the liners and press the panel firmly onto the glass.
Bracket method (if taping to the glass isn't possible): mount the brackets inside behind or next to a shade bracket, extended lower for more sun, with the top reversed if space is tight, or as an outside mount next to the shade bracket (least sun).
Set the bottom groove of the unit onto the bottom bracket hook, then press the top until it snaps in. If space is limited, attach the brackets to the unit before screwing them in place.
After the shade is installed, plug the solar unit into the motor recharge port.
- Only two of the holes in the solar bracket are threaded.
Remove the shade
Support the headrail so it can't fall.
Insert a screwdriver between the headrail and the tab at the bottom back of each bracket and gently pry to release the bracket, taking care not to damage the headrail finish.
Troubleshooting
Shade won't snap into the brackets: check that the brackets are aligned and level.
Shade is hard to raise or lower: make sure an inside mount isn't forced into a tight opening and has clearance at both ends, the brackets are level (shim if needed), hold-down brackets are released and the fabric isn't caught.
Shade raises unevenly or the bottom rail is uneven: measure the window diagonals to check it's square, check the brackets are level, and adjust the cords under the bottom rail.
Cord tensioner grabs the cord: check the tensioner is mounted properly and reinstall it if needed.
Motor doesn't work: charge the motor.
Motor keeps running in one direction: the limit setting failed and needs to be reset.
Remote light doesn't come on or range gets shorter: replace the remote battery (CR2430 lithium).
