Before you begin

  1. Check that the parts in your package match your shade; some parts vary with the lift system and mounting option.

  2. Choose fasteners for your surface: the provided No. 6 hex-head screws for wood, wall anchors or expansion bolts (not provided) for drywall or plaster, and sheet metal screws (not provided) for metal.

  3. Plan your bracket positions: an end bracket about 3" in from each end of the headrail, with any extra brackets spaced evenly between them. Placement is the same for inside and outside mounts.

  • Rechargeable motorized: up to 38" wide: 2 brackets; 38-1/8" to 72": 3 brackets; over 72-1/8": 4 brackets
  • Cordless lift, cord loop and motorized (external battery): 18" to 38": 2 brackets; 38-1/8" to 72": 3; 72-1/8" to 106": 4; 106-1/8" to 140": 5; 140-1/8" to 174": 6
  • Cordless lift & lock: 12" to 31": 2 brackets; 31-1/8" to 72": 3; 72-1/8" to 84": 4
  • Cordlock: 12" to 31": 2 brackets; 31-1/8" to 72": 3

Inside mount

  1. Before mounting, add any extra depth needed to clear window cranks or handles.

  2. Drill pilot holes with a 3/32" bit.

  3. Screw each installation bracket to the top of the window opening through its top two holes.

  4. Make sure all brackets are level and aligned. Shim them if needed.

  5. Use wall anchors in drywall and follow the anchor maker's instructions (anchors not provided).

  • Rechargeable motorized, wall-mounted wand: 1/2" minimum depth, 2-1/4" fully recessed
  • Rechargeable motorized, headrail-mounted wand: 1-1/4" minimum depth, 3" fully recessed
  • Cordless lift & lock: 1-1/4" minimum depth, 2-1/4" fully recessed
  • Cordless lift, cord loop and motorized: 3/4" minimum depth, 2-1/8" fully recessed
  • Cordlock: 1" minimum depth, 2-1/2" fully recessed
  • Motorized with external battery mounted to the back of the headrail: 2-5/8" minimum depth, 3-1/4" flush mount

Outside mount

  1. Drill pilot holes with a 3/32" bit.

  2. Screw each installation bracket to the wall or molding through its two back holes.

  3. Make sure all brackets are level and aligned. Shim them if needed.

  4. Use wall anchors in drywall (not provided).

  • Minimum flat mounting surface: 1-1/2" for rechargeable motorized, cordless lift, cord loop and motorized shades; 3/4" for cordless lift & lock and cordlock shades.
  • Motorized shades with an external battery mounted to the back of the headrail need extension brackets.

Spacer blocks and extension brackets (optional)

  1. Spacer blocks: attach them to the end of each bracket, using screws long enough to reach into the surface. Use no more than three spacer blocks per bracket, and don't combine them with extension brackets.

  2. Extension brackets: position them on the wall with their tops aligned and level with each other.

  3. Screw each extension bracket through its back holes with two screws.

  4. Attach the installation brackets to the extension brackets with the included screws and nuts, using the same holes on every bracket so the shade projects evenly.

  5. Side mount with extension brackets: measure up from the sill to the mounting height on each side of the frame, mark it, mount an extension bracket on each side, confirm the headrail will sit level, then bolt the installation brackets on with the nuts and bolts provided.

Side mount (cordless lift & lock and cordlock)

  1. Line up the top of a side bracket with where you want the top of the headrail, mark the screw holes, remove the bracket and drill.

  2. Drive screws into the keyhole-slot positions only, leaving about 1/8" of each screw sticking out.

  3. Pull the end cap out of the headrail, slide the bracket on, replace the end cap, then slide the bracket all the way into the headrail. Do the same at the other end.

  4. Hook one bracket's keyhole slot over the screw on one side of the frame. Bring the other bracket over the screw on the other side and slide down, flexing the bracket inward until the screw engages.

  5. Make sure both brackets are all the way down so each screw sits in the top of its keyhole slot.

  6. Drive a screw into the bottom hole of each bracket and tighten all screws.

Install the headrail

  1. Motorized and cordless lift shades: finish the prep in the motorized or cordless lift section below before hanging the shade.

  2. Face the front of the shade toward you and tilt the headrail slightly back so its front inside lip goes into the front clips of the brackets.

  3. Center the shade in the window opening.

  4. Push the headrail back and up until it snaps into the back clips of the brackets.

  5. Check that no fabric is pinched between the brackets and the headrail.

Rechargeable motorized shades: prepare and hang

The shade is set at the factory to the channel you ordered, or channel 1 if none was specified. If you ordered channel 0, the shade is not linked to a remote: link it before installing it in the window.

  1. Find the receiver wire, a small gray wire coming out of the motor near the end cap, and make sure it is outside the headrail. For best range, point it into the room.

  2. Route the motor wire so it comes out the back of the shade.

  3. Hang the headrail, making sure the motor wire and charging port do not get in the way of a bracket.

  • Motorized shades with an external battery pack: attach the battery pack to the motor and pair the remote, using the instructions included with the remote, before installing the shade.

Rechargeable motorized shades: link a remote

Read this whole section before starting.

  1. Select the channel you want with the remote's CHANNEL buttons.

  2. Press the SETTING button on the motor and release it as soon as the motor starts to beep. It gives 4 fast beeps followed by 5 long beeps.

  3. Press CONFIRM on the remote during the long beeps, before the last one. The motor answers with 3 fast beeps to confirm the link.

  4. Repeat for any other shade you want on the same channel (one shade per channel is recommended).

  5. Repeat these steps to link the remaining shades to other channels.

  • Every linked shade is also added to the ALL channel automatically.

Rechargeable motorized shades: operate and set a favorite position

  1. Select a channel with the CHANNEL buttons; its indicator lights up. When all 5 lights are on, the remote controls all 5 channels at once.

  2. Press UP or DOWN to raise or lower the shade, and STOP to stop it anywhere.

  3. Tap UP or DOWN for less than 2 seconds to move the shade in short steps; hold for more than 2 seconds to run at normal speed.

  4. To set a favorite position, move the shade there, press and hold the LIMIT button on the back of the remote with a small screwdriver or pen tip, then also press and hold UP. Release both when the motor beeps.

  5. To go to the favorite position, press STOP while the shade is at its upper or lower limit, or after it has been stopped for at least 3 seconds.

  6. To erase the favorite position, bring the shade to the upper limit, press and hold LIMIT, then press and hold UP. Release both when the motor beeps.

Rechargeable motorized shades: adjust the limits

The upper and lower limits are set at the factory. If you clear them, you must reset both. Select the shade's channel first; if other shades share the channel, unplug them.

  1. Lower limit: hold the LIMIT button and release it once the motor starts beeping.

  2. Press DOWN; the shade runs down continuously. Press STOP when it is close to where you want the lower limit.

  3. Fine-tune with UP or DOWN (the motor moves step by step), then press CONFIRM. The motor beeps.

  4. Upper limit: press UP; the shade runs up continuously. Press STOP when it is close to the upper limit you want.

  5. Fine-tune with UP or DOWN, then press CONFIRM. The motor beeps and the limits are set.

Rechargeable motorized shades: charge the motor and care for the remote

  1. Charge the motor when the shade starts running slower than normal.

  2. Plug the 8.4V charger into the charging wire at the back left end of the headrail, then into an outlet. A red light means it is charging.

  3. Keep charging for 1 hour after the light turns green to fully charge the batteries. A typical charge takes 4 to 6 hours.

  4. To replace the remote battery, hold the remote face up and pull out the battery tray using the notch on the back.

  5. Insert a new CR2430 lithium battery with the writing facing up and slide the tray back in.

  • Motor doesn't work: charge the motor.
  • Motor keeps running in one direction: the limit setting failed; reset the limits.
  • Remote light doesn't come on or range gets shorter: replace the remote battery (CR2430).

Cordless lift shades

  1. The color-coordinated handle comes already inserted in the moving rail(s); a clear handle or clear insert must be chosen when ordering. Install the handle before mounting the shade.

  2. Hold the handle in the center of the bottom rail so the shade moves level. Shades over 42" wide have 2 handles spaced along the center of the bottom rail.

  3. Lower the shade by gently pulling down to the position you want.

  4. Raise the shade by gently pushing up to the position you want.

  • The plastic handle is not easy to remove; contact customer service if you need to remove it.

Cordless lift & lock shades

  1. Push and hold the button on the bottom rail handle.

  2. Raise or lower the shade to the position you want.

  3. Release the button to lock the shade in place.

Continuous cord loop shades

  1. Before anything else, slide the cord tensioner to the bottom of the cord loop: push a small screwdriver, punch or awl through the screw hole at the bottom of the tensioner and move the hole down to the indicator line to release the safety mechanism.

  2. Secure the cord tensioner to the wall or window frame, following the instructions in the included tensioner kit.

  3. Place the tensioner as close to the window as possible and out of the path of the shade fabric.

  4. To operate, pull down on the cord loop: one side raises the shade and the other lowers it. If you keep pulling the same cord after the shade is down, it will start to rise.

  • The shade will not work properly unless the cord tensioner is secured.
  • Don't raise the shade higher than intended. If it raises unevenly, lowering it completely usually lets the cords realign on the spool.

Cordlock shades (bottom-up and top-down/bottom-up)

  1. Bottom-up: to lower or release the shade, pull the cord inward toward the center of the shade.

  2. Bottom-up: to raise or lock the shade, pull the cord straight down and outward toward the edge of the shade.

  3. Top-down/bottom-up: the right-hand cord moves the middle rail and the left-hand cord moves the bottom rail. Use the same inward (release) and outward (lock) motions for either rail.

  4. Before raising the middle rail all the way to the headrail, raise the bottom rail a couple of inches so the equalizer doesn't get pinched between the rails.

  5. Mount a cord cleat at a safe height, out of reach from furniture a child could climb, and wrap the excess cord around it after each use.

  • If the breakaway cord connector comes apart: one side has a cord entering at the bottom. Fit the bottom edges together with the corded side inside the other, swing the tops together and press in the middle.

Attach the hold-down brackets (optional)

  1. Lower the shade and put the hold-down pins into the bottom rail end caps.

  2. Mark the hold-down bracket locations on the mounting surface.

  3. Keeping the brackets level, attach each one with two screws.

  • On cordlock shades, hold-down brackets are for outside mounts only.

Level the bottom or middle rail

Raise and lower the shade several times. If the length is off or a rail is not level, adjust it.

  1. Lift the rail on the side you want to adjust to take the weight off the cord.

  2. With a screwdriver or a dime, turn the adjustment screw clockwise to raise that side or counterclockwise to lower it.

  3. Each half turn moves the rail 1/4"; the maximum adjustment is 1/2".

  4. Cordless lift & lock top-down/bottom-up bottom rail: remove the right end cap, take out the small white plastic tool inside the rail, press the dial just to its right in about 1/4" with the tool, and turn clockwise to lower or counterclockwise to raise the rail. Put the tool back and replace the end cap. A flathead screwdriver works if the tool is lost.

Remove the shade

  1. Support the headrail as you release the brackets so it doesn't fall.

  2. Insert a screwdriver between the headrail and the tab at the bottom back of each bracket and gently pry to release the headrail. Take care not to scratch the headrail finish.

  3. Then tilt the headrail forward and down out of the front clips (the reverse of installing).

Troubleshooting

  1. Shade won't snap into the brackets: check that the brackets are aligned and level.

  2. Shade is hard to raise or lower: an inside-mount shade can't be forced into a tight opening, so check there is clearance at both ends. Also check the brackets are level, any hold-downs are released, and the fabric isn't caught.

  3. Shade raises unevenly or the bottom rail is uneven: measure the window diagonals to check it is square, level the brackets, and adjust the rail.

  4. Cord tensioner grabs the cord: check that it is mounted properly and reinstall it if needed.
