Before you begin

  1. Make sure the ITEM# matches on the panel box (marked "P") and the frame box (marked "F"); look on the Ccmp line of the box label. Each window has one box of panels and one box of frames.

  2. Carefully unpack the panels and frames, and do not mix them with parts from other windows.

  3. Check that you have all the parts shown in the parts diagram.

  4. Lay down a moving blanket or drop cloth and set up plenty of working space, ideally in front of the window.

  5. Keep the packaging until the shutters are working properly.

Assemble the frame

  1. Lay all the frame pieces face up on the floor.

  2. Place the left and top frame pieces on a flat surface; a small wood block helps protect the floor and gives a flush fit.

  3. Set a Hoffman key in the corner slot, rounded side up, and push the top frame down onto it.

  4. Repeat at the remaining corners to complete the four-sided frame.

Inside mount (Z-frame or L-frame): set the frame

  1. Position the assembled frame evenly in the window opening, using a tape measure and shims.

  2. Secure the frame with one nail or pre-drilled screw in the upper left frame only.

  3. Level the frame and secure it with one nail or screw in the upper right frame only.

Inside mount (Z-frame or L-frame): hang and align the panels

  1. Place the shutter panel in the frame, slide it into the frame hinges and insert the hinge pins. With two panels, hang the left panel first, then the right.

  2. Check that the panels are even across the top and bottom; if not, shift (rack) the bottom of the frame left or right until the gap is even.

  3. Secure the bottom of the left frame, below the hinge, with one nail or screw.

  4. Secure the bottom right frame with one nail or screw.

  5. Check the gaps between the panels and adjust them with the hinge spacers if needed: loosen the hinge screws, slip a spacer behind the hinge and retighten.

  6. Once the gap between panel and frame is even, secure the top and bottom frame with one nail or screw each.

  7. Check that the shutter operates properly, then add pre-drilled nails or screws on all sides of the frame.

  • Use 2 nails or screws at every hinge and 1 between hinges.

Outside mount (L-frame): set the frame

  1. Position the assembled frame evenly around the window opening, using your finger to make sure it sits flush with the opening.

  2. Secure it with one nail or pre-drilled screw in the upper left frame only, angling the drill or nail gun to hit a stud around the opening.

  3. Level the frame and secure it with one nail or screw in the upper right frame only.

Outside mount (L-frame): hang and align the panels

  1. Place the hinge side of the panel in position first, then insert the hinge pins. With two panels, hang the left panel first, then the right.

  2. Check that the panel is even across the top and bottom; if not, shift (rack) the bottom of the frame left or right until the gap is even. Do not secure the bottom frame yet.

  3. With the panel closed, make a small pencil mark on the wall along the bottom left side of the frame.

  4. Open the panel, line the frame up with your mark and secure the bottom of the left frame, below the hinge, with one nail or screw.

  5. Secure the bottom right frame, below the hinge, with one nail or screw.

  6. Check the gaps between the panels and frame and adjust with the hinge spacers if needed: loosen the hinge screws without removing them, insert the spacer and retighten.

  7. Secure the middle of the top, bottom and side frames with pre-drilled nails or screws.

  8. Make sure the shutters operate properly and add more nails or screws if needed.
