How to Measure

How to Measure: Inside Mount

3 min read

Let's make sure an inside mount will work for your window!  Using a metal tape measure, first check if you have sufficient depth:

  • Measure inside the window opening from the back of the window to the front of the opening where the shade would mount. The depth at the top of the window must be at least 1 3/8" to mount the brackets. To have a flush mount (meaning the shade is fully recessed in the window opening) the depth must be at least 2 1/8". If your depth is not sufficient for mounting the brackets, please see our outside mount instructions or consider a different product.

How to Measure:

Let's start with the Width:

  • Measure inside of the window opening/frame from left to right to the nearest 1/8" at three places: at the top of the opening, the middle of the opening, and then the bottom of the opening. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the narrowest. If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8".  That is your ordering width.

Now, let's do the Height:

  • Measure the inside of the window opening/frame from the top of the opening to the bottom of the opening/sill to the nearest 1/8" in three places: on the left-hand side, the middle, and on the right-hand side. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the tallest. That is your ordering height.

Note: Always provide us with the actual measurement of the window opening. We will make the necessary deduction of approximately 3/8" to your shade's width to allow room for installation and for proper movement of the shade within the window opening. No deductions will be made to your height.

How to Measure: Outside Mount

4 min read

Before you start measuring, decide where above your window opening you want to mount your shade. You will need at least 1" of flat vertical space above the window to mount the brackets. The shade can be installed directly above the window opening, or higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the shade is raised.

If you have trim around the window, you can mount the shade above the trim, directly on the trim (if you have the required minimum flat space for the brackets), or to the sides of the trim if you do not have enough mounting space above the window or on the trim itself. See the directions below for how you'd like to install your shade.

If you do not have sufficient vertical space for mounting the brackets, please see our inside mount instructions or consider a different product.

Width:

  • Looking at your window and surrounding wall, decide what area you would like to cover. We recommend the shade extends about 2" on each side of the window opening for the best light control and appearance.
  • Using a metal tape measure, measure from left to right including your desired extra space on each side of the window—that is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window you would like to install your shade but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. The shade can be positioned higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the shade is raised.
  • Measure from the top of where you will mount the shade on the wall down to where you want the bottom of the shade to be, using the same extra space below your window opening as you used above; if you have a protruding windowsill, measure down to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.

Width:

  • Looking at your window and surrounding wall, decide what area you would like to cover. We recommend the shade extends about 2" on either side of the window opening for the best light control and appearance. You can also choose to have the shade the same width as your window trim.
  • Using a metal tape measure, measure from left to right including any desired extra space on each side of the window—that is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window you would like to install your shade but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. The shade can be positioned higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the shade is raised.
  • Measure from the top of where you will mount the shade on the wall down to where you want the bottom of the shade to be, using the same extra space below your window opening as you used above, or to the bottom edge of the trim if you prefer; if you have a protruding windowsill, measure down to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.

Width:

  • Confirm that the height of your trim is at least the minimum height required for installing the mounting brackets. At the top of your window, use a steel measuring tape and measure from outer edge to outer edge of the trim.  That is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Measure from the top of your trim to the bottom of your trim or to the top of the windowsill if you have a protruding sill. That is your ordering height.

Width:

  • Using a metal tape measure, measure left to right from the outside edge of the trim piece that goes around the glass to the other outside edge. That is your ordering width. However, if you have space, it is best to order the shade about 2" wider for better light control.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window trim piece you would like to install your shade but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. Measure down to where you want the bottom of the shade to be, using the same extra space below the window trim piece as you used above. That is your ordering height.

Note: We carry complimentary hold-downs (door brackets) which can be requested during the ordering process. These should be installed for a successful door mount as they secure the shade at the bottom of the door so that it does not swing when the door opens and closes.

Why Cordless Blackout Cellular Shades Belong in Your Home

Cordless blackout cellular shades are among the most effective and versatile window treatments available today. Designed to deliver complete light blockage while improving home insulation, cordless blackout cellular shades address two of the most common challenges homeowners face: controlling light and managing indoor temperature.

The cellular construction is what sets these shades apart from standard blackout blinds and flat roller shades. Each honeycomb cell traps an air pocket between the window glass and your room, creating a thermal barrier that helps reduce energy costs year-round. In winter, this insulation keeps your home warmer by slowing heat loss through the glass. In summer, it resists heat gain from outside, lowering the demand on your cooling system. Blackout cellular shades with this cellular design consistently outperform flat-panel shades and corded blinds on insulation performance.

The cordless design is equally important. There are no cords to pull, no chains to tangle, and no mechanisms to figure out. Simply grab the rail at the bottom and raise or lower the shade to your preferred position. Raising and lowering is smooth and effortless, and the cordless lift is designed to maintain that ease through years of daily use. The convenience of this cordless operation makes these shades a practical choice for any room in your house, from sleeping areas to home offices and living rooms.

From a style standpoint, these cordless blackout cellular shades bring a sleek, modern appearance to any window. The headrail and coordinated bottom rail give each shade a clean, polished look against the wall, and the streamlined cordless design suits both contemporary and traditional interiors. Whether you are covering one window or your entire home, the stylish profile of cordless blackout cellular shades integrates naturally with virtually any decor. For customers seeking ultimate light control, complete darkness, durable fabrics, and a modern window covering without cords, cordless blackout cellular shades are the right choice.

Best Rooms for Blackout Cellular Shades

Blackout cellular shades are designed for spaces where insulation, light, and privacy control deliver the most value.

Bedrooms: Bedrooms are the most common application for cordless blackout cellular shades. Complete darkness supports deeper, more consistent sleep, making these shades ideal for light sleepers, shift workers, and infants. The cordless design keeps your sleeping area looking clean and uncluttered, and the custom-fit blackout fabric eliminates the large light gaps that cheaper window coverings leave behind.

Media Rooms: They benefit greatly from blackout cellular shades. Complete light blockage removes screen glare and improves picture quality, creating the ultimate viewing environment. Cordless blackout cellular shades are a natural fit for media rooms because the sleek cordless design keeps the space looking modern and polished, with no visible pull cords to disrupt the aesthetic. Customers who install blackout cellular shades in their media rooms consistently describe a dramatically improved experience.

Nurseries and Children's Rooms: Blackout cellular shades are ideal for nurseries and children's rooms. The certified cordless design eliminates cord hazards, making these shades one of the safest available options for rooms with young children. Darkness supports daytime naps and consistent sleep schedules. Homes with pets that rest indoors during the day also benefit from the calm, darker environment these shades provide.

Home Offices: In a home office, cordless blackout cellular shades deliver precise light control to reduce screen glare and protect your workspace from distracting sunlight. The cellular insulation also helps maintain a comfortable temperature year-round, and the stylish profile adds a modern, professional look to the room.

Living Rooms: Cordless blackout cellular shades in living rooms provide privacy during evening hours and protect furniture and flooring from UV exposure. The wide selection of available colors allows these shades to match or complement existing decor, functioning as both a practical window covering and a stylish design element. In west- or south-facing rooms, blackout cellular shades are especially effective at managing intense afternoon sunlight.

Style, Color, and Fabric Selection

These cordless blackout cellular shades are available in a curated selection of fabrics and colors designed to complement a wide range of interior styles. Whether your home is modern and minimal or warm and layered, the color options are designed to match virtually any wall color, trim, or decor.

Available options include White, Daylight, Ivory, Vanilla, Amber, Tussah, Espresso, Dove Grey, and Storm. Free fabric samples are available before you purchase. Viewing the actual fabric in your room's natural lighting is the most reliable way to ensure a perfect fit with your existing style.

The fabrics used in these shades are durable, fade-resistant, and built for long-term daily use. The blackout lining performs consistently across all color options, and the cellular pleat construction holds its shape through daily raising and lowering over multiple years. Whether you select a lighter tone like Ivory or a deeper option like Espresso, you get the same durable build and blackout performance.

For customers who want additional colors, larger size options, or a double cellular construction with higher insulating performance, the Deluxe Blackout Cellular Shades in our collection are a stylish upgrade worth comparing before your purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes cordless blackout cellular shades different from standard blackout blinds?

These shades use a honeycomb construction that creates insulating air pockets, which standard blackout blinds and flat roller shades do not provide. The cordless design removes hanging cords entirely, improving safety for children and pets and making everyday operation more convenient. Together, these features make cordless blackout cellular shades a more functional, modern, and energy-efficient option than traditional corded blinds.

Can these shades be motorized or powered?

These operate via manual cordless lift, not a motor. If powered operation is a priority, motorized blinds and powered shades are available elsewhere in our shop. A motor-driven shade works well for windows that are high on the wall, for large picture windows, or for smart home setups where remote access to window controls is preferred.

Will blackout cellular shades help lower my energy costs?

Yes. The cellular construction traps air inside each honeycomb cell, creating insulation that slows heat transfer through the window. In winter, this keeps your home warmer and reduces heating demand. In summer, it slows heat gain from outside, helping lower cooling costs. Blackout cellular shades are among the most energy-efficient window coverings available, and the insulation benefit accumulates into meaningful savings over time.

Is installation difficult?

No. All mounting hardware is included, and most customers complete installation in 30 minutes or less. The shades can be installed inside the window opening or mounted to the wall above the window frame for an outside mount. If you prefer professional help, installation services are available through the product page. The cordless design makes the shades simple and easy to operate immediately after installation.

What is top down bottom up, and is it available on this shade?

Top down bottom up is a feature that allows you to lower the top portion of a shade independently from the bottom, giving you simultaneous light and privacy control. You can allow natural light in from above while keeping the lower portion of the window covered. This product uses a standard cordless lift only but you can check out our Cordless Light Filtering Top Down Bottom Up Single Cellular Shades.

How do I ensure a perfect fit when ordering?

Measure your window to the nearest 1/8 inch before placing your purchase. For inside mount, measure the exact width and height of the window opening. For outside mount, measure the total area you want to cover, including any desired overlap onto the surrounding wall or trim. As a company, Blindster backs every order with its Fit or Free Guarantee, meaning if your shades do not fit for any reason, we will remake them at no charge (see policy for details). Free fabric samples are also available to confirm your color and style before purchase.

Are these shades safe for homes with children and pets?

Yes. These shades are certified Best for Kids, confirming that the cordless design has been independently verified as safe for households with young children. There are no hanging cords or accessible loops that could pose a risk. Pets also benefit from the cordless design, as cords on standard blinds and shades are frequently chewed or tangled. These shades are among the safest available options for any home with children or pets.

Do these shades look good in modern and traditional homes?

Yes. The clean, cordless profile gives these shades a sleek style that works well in both modern and traditional interiors. The blackout fabric is designed to block light completely while still looking refined from inside the room. Clients across a wide range of home styles consistently report a good experience with how these shades look and perform after installation.
