How to Measure

How to Measure: Inside Mount

3 min read

Let's make sure an inside mount will work for your window!  Using a metal tape measure, first check if you have sufficient depth:

  • Measure inside the window opening from the back of the window to the front of the opening where the shade would mount. The depth at the top of the window must be at least 1 3/8" to mount the brackets. To have a flush mount (meaning the shade is fully recessed in the window opening) the depth must be at least 2 1/8". If your depth is not sufficient for mounting the brackets, please see our outside mount instructions or consider a different product.

How to Measure:

Let's start with the Width:

  • Measure inside of the window opening/frame from left to right to the nearest 1/8" at three places: at the top of the opening, the middle of the opening, and then the bottom of the opening. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the narrowest. If rounding is necessary, round down to the nearest 1/8".  That is your ordering width.

Now, let's do the Height:

  • Measure the inside of the window opening/frame from the top of the opening to the bottom of the opening/sill to the nearest 1/8" in three places: on the left-hand side, the middle, and on the right-hand side. Write down all 3 measurements and circle the tallest. That is your ordering height.

Note: Always provide us with the actual measurement of the window opening. We will make the necessary deduction of approximately 3/8" to your shade's width to allow room for installation and for proper movement of the shade within the window opening. No deductions will be made to your height.

How to Measure: Outside Mount

4 min read

Before you start measuring, decide where above your window opening you want to mount your shade. You will need at least 1" of flat vertical space above the window to mount the brackets. The shade can be installed directly above the window opening, or higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the shade is raised.

If you have trim around the window, you can mount the shade above the trim, directly on the trim (if you have the required minimum flat space for the brackets), or to the sides of the trim if you do not have enough mounting space above the window or on the trim itself. See the directions below for how you'd like to install your shade.

If you do not have sufficient vertical space for mounting the brackets, please see our inside mount instructions or consider a different product.

Width:

  • Looking at your window and surrounding wall, decide what area you would like to cover. We recommend the shade extends about 2" on each side of the window opening for the best light control and appearance.
  • Using a metal tape measure, measure from left to right including your desired extra space on each side of the window—that is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window you would like to install your shade but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. The shade can be positioned higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the shade is raised.
  • Measure from the top of where you will mount the shade on the wall down to where you want the bottom of the shade to be, using the same extra space below your window opening as you used above; if you have a protruding windowsill, measure down to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.

Width:

  • Looking at your window and surrounding wall, decide what area you would like to cover. We recommend the shade extends about 2" on either side of the window opening for the best light control and appearance. You can also choose to have the shade the same width as your window trim.
  • Using a metal tape measure, measure from left to right including any desired extra space on each side of the window—that is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window you would like to install your shade but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. The shade can be positioned higher up to give the appearance of a larger window and to have more clear space in the window when the shade is raised.
  • Measure from the top of where you will mount the shade on the wall down to where you want the bottom of the shade to be, using the same extra space below your window opening as you used above, or to the bottom edge of the trim if you prefer; if you have a protruding windowsill, measure down to the top of the sill. That is your ordering height.

Width:

  • Confirm that the height of your trim is at least the minimum height required for installing the mounting brackets. At the top of your window, use a steel measuring tape and measure from outer edge to outer edge of the trim.  That is your ordering width.

Height:

  • Measure from the top of your trim to the bottom of your trim or to the top of the windowsill if you have a protruding sill. That is your ordering height.

Width:

  • Using a metal tape measure, measure left to right from the outside edge of the trim piece that goes around the glass to the other outside edge. That is your ordering width. However, if you have space, it is best to order the shade about 2" wider for better light control.

Height:

  • Consider how far above the window trim piece you would like to install your shade but at least starting with the minimum vertical space referenced above. Measure down to where you want the bottom of the shade to be, using the same extra space below the window trim piece as you used above. That is your ordering height.

Note: We carry complimentary hold-downs (door brackets) which can be requested during the ordering process. These should be installed for a successful door mount as they secure the shade at the bottom of the door so that it does not swing when the door opens and closes.

Why These Cordless Top Down Bottom Up Cellular Shades Outperform Standard Window Coverings

Standard window shades offer one setting: up or down. Cordless light filtering top down bottom up cellular shades work from both ends of the window, giving you control over natural light and privacy that standard cellular shades and roller blinds simply cannot match. Lower the top portion to bring natural light in from above while the lower half stays closed for street-level privacy. Raise the bottom rail to let light in from below while the upper portion keeps the view blocked. The result is ultimate light control and precise privacy control without stacking multiple window treatments. Cordless top down bottom up light filtering cellular shades are the practical choice whenever daylight and privacy both need to be managed at the same time.

Cordless Lift System: No Cords, Consistent Hold

The cordless lift built into these cellular shades uses an internal tensioning mechanism in the headrail. There are no pull cords, no wands, and no loops to manage. The cordless operation requires only a gentle push or pull on the bottom rail or top rail. Light filtering cellular shades with a cordless lift hold their position at any point along the window frame, giving you flexible light control throughout the day.

Cordless light filtering cellular shades are also the safer choice for homes with children and pets. The cordless design removes all dangling cords from the window, eliminating a common household hazard. These cordless top down bottom up cellular shades meet all CPSC child safety guidelines, and the cord-free design is a genuine improvement for pet safety.

Single Cell Light Filtering Fabric: Quality Insulation, Softer Light

These cordless light filtering cellular shades are crafted from quality materials formed into individual 3/8" honeycomb cells. The single cell light filtering construction traps air inside each cell, creating a thermal buffer that helps regulate indoor temperatures year-round. This reduces heat transfer in summer and blocks cold drafts in winter, contributing to lower energy costs over time. The R-value of 3.4 reflects good quality insulation for a single cell window covering in this category.

Unlike room darkening or blackout fabrics, light filtering cellular shades diffuse incoming sunlight into a warm, even glow. The room stays bright without harsh glare. The fabric shares the same color on the front and back, so these cellular shades look polished from outside the home as well, a detail that matters for curb appeal on any street-facing window.

Room-by-Room: Flexible Light Control with Cordless Shades

Bottom up shades are among the most versatile window shades available because they let you adjust light and privacy independently at any height. Whether you need soft overhead light with the lower portion covered, or brightness from below with the top blocked, cordless top down bottom up cellular shades give you that flexibility in any space.

Living Rooms

In living rooms, cordless light filtering cellular shades give you flexible light control that adjusts to the time of day. Lower the shade from the top to let natural light stream in near the ceiling while maintaining privacy from the street. Raise the bottom rail in the afternoon to catch lower-angle sunlight while keeping the upper portion closed. These cordless window shades fit your windows perfectly when sized correctly, and their clean profile suits most interior styles without requiring additional curtain layers.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Bottom up shades are an ideal choice for bedrooms, where keeping the lower half of the window covered through the morning while letting some light in from the top is a daily priority. For bathrooms and exposed windows facing neighbors, the top-down position is a perfect solution for maintaining privacy without blocking natural light. These cordless top down bottom up cellular shades can replace layered window coverings in rooms where light filtering coverage and privacy both matter throughout the day. Bottom up cellular shades are especially practical on windows where full light control is needed without any extra hardware.

Doors and Other Exposed Windows

Light filtering cellular blinds also work well as a window covering on doors. For door mount installations, choose outside mount and include hold downs at checkout. The hold downs secure the bottom rail to the door frame, preventing the shade from swaying when the door opens and closes. The sleek design and neutral color palette of these cordless cellular shades complement most room styles, from classic painted trim to contemporary door and window frames.

What is the minimum depth required for inside mount?

The minimum depth for inside mount is 1 3/8 inches. For a flush appearance, a depth of 2 1/8 inches is recommended. Measure your window frame and confirm the minimum depth is available before ordering cordless light filtering top down bottom up cellular shades for an inside mount application.

How do I get accurate measurements?

Use a metal tape measure and record exact window dimensions to the nearest 1/8 inch. For inside mount, measure the window opening at three points across the width and use the smallest reading. For outside mount, measure the exact size you want covered. Detailed instructions with step-by-step diagrams are available in the "How to Measure" section above.

Can I choose cordless top down bottom up for a wide window?

Yes. Cordless top down bottom up cellular shades are available from 19 to 72 inches wide. When you choose cordless for a wider window, the factory includes additional brackets automatically to support the headrail. Verify outside mount flat space and minimum depth before ordering to ensure a perfect fit.

Do cordless light filtering window shades help reduce energy costs?

Yes. The single cell construction in these cordless light filtering cellular shades creates an insulating air pocket in each honeycomb cell, reducing heat transfer through the glass and helping stabilize indoor temperatures. This insulation reduces energy costs in both summer and winter. The R-value of 3.4 reflects solid performance for a single cell window covering.

Are these cellular shades pet safe?

Yes. The cordless design removes all dangling cords from these light filtering cellular shades, making them a safe and practical choice for homes with pets and small children. These cordless top down bottom up cellular shades are pet safe and meet all CPSC child safety guidelines.

What exact size do I need for a new blind to fit?

For the inside mount, enter the exact window dimensions and the factory applies the appropriate deduction. For the outside mount, enter the exact size you want the shade to cover. For a new blind to arrive ready to hang, take measurements twice before ordering. Our Fit or Free Guarantee provides a perfect fit for any mount type.

What style and color options are available?

These cordless light filtering top down bottom up single cellular shades come in six colors: Cool White, Daylight, Ivory Beige, Antique Linen, Espresso, and Cool Silver. The neutral palette and low-profile style of these cordless light filtering cellular shades complement a range of interior styles. These are nice blinds for anyone who wants quality light filtering cellular shades with cord-free convenience. Order free samples to check color and fabric quality before you commit.

Can these cellular shades work as room darkening window coverings?

No. These are light filtering cellular shades, not room darkening or blackout shades. Light filtering cellular shades diffuse natural light rather than blocking it. For room darkening coverage, Blindster carries single cell and double cell blackout cellular shades in cordless lift configurations. Both are good quality blinds built with the same durable cellular construction.

What is the difference between single cell and double cell cellular shades?

Single cell cellular shades use one layer of honeycomb cells. They suit moderate climates and inside mount applications where minimum depth is limited. Double cell cellular shades stack two layers of cells for higher insulation value. Both styles are available in cordless light filtering configurations with the same simple operation, the same cordless lift mechanism, and the same easy install experience as these cordless top down bottom up cellular shades.
