Question 1

1. What are roman shades?

Accepted Answer

Roman shades are a type of window covering made from fabric that hangs flat or in soft folds when lowered and gathers into horizontal pleats when raised. Unlike roller shades, which roll around a tube, Roman shades fold and stack at the top of the window, creating a layered, textured profile. They are one of the oldest window treatment styles, originally developed from the cloth awning systems used in Roman amphitheaters, and remain one of the most popular choices for homeowners who want a window treatment that doubles as a design element. Blindster offers Roman shades in three fold styles: plain fold, soft fold, and flat fold.

Question 2

2. What's the difference between Roman blinds and Roman shades?

Accepted Answer

In practice, the terms roman blinds and roman shades refer to the same product. The terminology varies by region, with "roman blinds" more common in the UK and Australia and "roman shades" standard in the United States. Both describe a fabric window covering that folds into horizontal pleats when raised. At Blindster, the on-site term is roman shades, and every product in the roman shades collection uses this naming convention.

Question 3

3. Are Roman shades in style?

Accepted Answer

Roman shades have been a design staple for decades and show no signs of going out of style. Interior designers consistently recommend them because the fabric-based construction offers a warmth and texture that hard window treatments like blinds and shutters cannot match. The range of fold styles, fabrics, and patterns available makes roman shades adaptable to virtually any aesthetic, from minimalist modern (a flat fold in a neutral solid) to traditional (a soft fold in a rich texture). Their versatility is what keeps them current.

Question 4

4. Do roman shades look good from the outside?

Accepted Answer

Roman shades present a clean, uniform appearance from the outside. When lowered, the fabric sits flat against the glass and shows a consistent color through the window. Most Blindster roman shades have a neutral white or off-white backing on the street-facing side, which creates a cohesive look across multiple windows even if you have chosen different fabric colors inside. If exterior uniformity is a priority, inside-mounted roman shades with a standard lining give you the most consistent appearance from the curb.

Question 5

5. What are Roman shades good for?

Accepted Answer

Roman shades excel in rooms where you want a window treatment that contributes to the decor rather than just covering the glass. Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and home offices are the most popular applications. The fabric softens the window and adds texture, while light-filtering or blackout liner options give you control over how much light enters the room. Roman shades are also a strong choice for layering with drapery panels, where the shade handles light and privacy while the panels frame the window and add visual weight. For flexible light control, Roman shades with top-down/bottom-up let you lower the top of the shade independently for natural light without sacrificing privacy.
